盛り上がりました、AJC2009

　９月13日から19日の頂点をはさんで（最後は24日でしょうか）長期にわたったAJCおよび関連行事は、マイナーな支障はあったかもしれませんが、アカデミックな観点からも教育的・社交的観点からも、おおかた大成功といえるものになったと思います。首相の「全員野球ではありませんが」、全員の cooperation & collaboration の賜物です。

　とりわけ狭義の英国史にとどまらず、アジア史・日本史・インド史・アメリカ史・フランス史の第一人者の参加もあって、共通論題サブタイトルの expansion in perspective が現実化しました。とりわけ19日 junior sessions は盛り上がりました（十分に予期されたことですが）。こうした経験を一緒に共有できたことも、長期的にみて大きく深い資産となるに違いないと確信しています。

　久しぶりにメールを見ると、このようなメールが来ていました。関連しますので、引用します。

Dear Kazu
Can I thank again the AJC committee, the young scholars who gave papers,
and the various 'staff' helpers? A tremendous amount of work was done by
you all, both to make the conference such a success, and to ensure that
the British visitors had an enjoyable and memorable stay.

I had a very good time indeed. I learned a lot, including about the
strengths and weaknesses of my own paper. I saw a lot. I ate a lot of
good food. And I met many interesting people - even on the Skyliner to
Narita the Japanese man next to me began to talk in good English about
his trips to Oxford and Aberystwyth!

Dear Kazu,
Thank you so very much for inviting me to the AJC. I enjoyed
participating very much. I am very grateful for all the wonderful
hospitality. I was very honoured to meet many distinguished professors,
younger faculty, and very enthusiastic students. It is an excellent
enterprise. I am writing to a number of the students I met, and will
read some of their work.

　このように有意義に楽しく経過したAJCですが、土曜夜カポ・ペリカーノでは、食事が足りなくなりました。ご免なさい。
　店との間で、メニュおよび人数は当日午前中に確定して、以後の増減は飲物類で対応するという約束でした。何人になるか確たる予測は難しく「えいやっ」と決断して30名、しかも「中高年が多いので量より質」と言ってありました！ 若い人がたくさん来てくれたのは嬉しいのですが、食いっぱぐれた人がずいぶん居たようです。済みません。

【なお、今月初めに壊れたPC＝NECのかわりに注文し16日に納品したまま置いてあった最新鋭 Dynabook (限定販売。967g. ハードディスクでなくSSDです。薄くて美しい！) の開箱については、また後ほど。】
