Reader Service message
Self-service Photography

Dear Kazuhiko,

Over the past few years, many people who use our Reading Rooms have asked us
to consider introducing a self-service photography facility so that Readers
can use their own devices to photograph items for personal research purposes.

We are now pleased to announce that we are extending our current self-service
copying facilities to include photography. The new arrangements will take
effect from 5 January 2015 in the following Reading Rooms:

Boston Spa Reading Room
Humanities – Floor 1 & 2
Newsroom
Science – Floor 1 & 2
Social Sciences

We will review and assess the feedback we receive from Readers and staff,
before introducing self-service photography in the following Reading Rooms in
March 2015:-

Asian & African Studies
Business & IP Centre
Maps
Manuscripts
Philatelic
Rare Books & Music

You will be able to photograph all physical collection items which you can
currently copy using our self-service copying facilities. Because of license
restrictions that apply to some of our electronic resources, you will not be
able to photograph computer screens.

You may use compact cameras, tablets and mobile phones to photograph material.
Any copies made may be used for personal reference purposes but must not
be used for a commercial purpose. As with our current copying services, copy
right and data protection/privacy laws must still be adhered to.

Before using your device to take photographs, we kindly ask that you view
our guidelines on self-service photography
