50th anniversary of EPT's Making of the English Working Class !

　ハーヴァード大学から、今朝、前触れなく a conference to reflect on the importance of Thompson's work around the world on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the publication of The Making of the English Working Class への参加の意向を尋ねるメールが到来。開催は10月3～5日だそうですが、proposal は5月、draft paper は9月1日まで、というのはちょっと厳しい。

でも、添付の案内などを熟読のうえ、間をおかず、積極的な返事を出しました。（学期中とはいえ、校務やたいくつな執筆, etc. より、学問と国際的発信のほうが優先ですよ！）

ということは、ぼくが出ていって場違いでないことは明らか。というより、ご指名で . . . as an ideal participant from Japan, so I write to encourage you to take part in this event. It would be an honor if you agreed to participate と書いてくださっているのだから、ありがたい話です。「日本におけるEPTの受容」といったよくある話より、もう少し普遍的な意味のある議論をしたいな。

Call for papers にもある表現ですが、
critical engagement with Thompson's legacy
ということで思いの丈を語りましょう。

このところ、ぼくの書くものはすべて「思いの丈」を率直に表明することにしています。かつてレトリックを用いて「上品に」書いたものの、正反対に受けとめてくださる読者もいたりして、これじゃ困る。
残り時間も少なくなってきたことだし‥‥。
